The table below shows the profile of the unweighted sample by key characteristics. As described in the weighting section, weighting was used to ensure that the profile of the weighted sample matched available population estimates as far as possible to ensure that published findings are representative.

In academic year 2024-25 (Year 8), the standard Family Affluence Scale (FAS) derived variable has been used.
Up to and including the academic year 2019-20 tables and in 2032-24, answers to the question 'How many times did you and your family travel out of England for a holiday last year?' fed into the creation of the FAS variable.
However, as travel was impacted in academic years 2020-21 and 2021-22 due to COVID-19 restrictions over the previous 12 months, an adjusted FAS variable was used, excluding answers to this question for those two years.
Since the bands for the adjusted FAS variable used in 2020-21 and 2021-22 are not comparable with the bands on the FAS variable used for 2017-2018, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2022-23 and 2023-2024 figures for FAS are not shown for 2020-21 and 2021-22 in the published tables for academic year 2024-25.
Please see the 'creation of derived variables' section for more details on FAS.
