How we'll assess your project

We receive more applications than we can support, so we use consistent assessment criteria to help us determine which projects are most likely to help us achieve our goal of getting more people active, reducing the number of inactive people and tackling long-standing inequalities.

  • Need and motivation

We'll assess the extent to which you have demonstrated an understanding of your community and the barriers they face to being more active.

We'll assess how the motivations of your organisation align with the community you seek to support.

We want to support projects that are responding to the needs of their community.

We want to understand how you have identified the barriers that are preventing people from being active and how you'll support people to overcome these.

The best way to achieve this is to show how your community has been involved in shaping the project.

You should tell us why your organisation is best placed to deliver the solution.

  • Impact on physical activity

We'll assess the extent to which your project has demonstrated it will increase physical activity.

This will consider the existing activity levels of those you plan to engage with and the scale of impact.

We want to support projects that will increase physical activity. Increasing activity can mean you’ll help people do a bit more activity, but we are most likely to support projects that will get people from doing little or no activity, to some activity each week.

We know that spaces where people can be active are an important part of providing opportunities. However, the space on its own is rarely enough to get people active, so please tell us how you’ll connect people to the opportunity and support them to make it thrive.

We understand most projects will focus on increasing activity in the short term; however, we are more likely to support projects that have considered how people can maintain their activity beyond the funded period.

Though we would love to see your project continue beyond the funding period, sustainability is also about how you can develop the confidence and capability to encourage people to be more active in their lives.

  • Delivery and capability

We'll assess the extent to which you have explained how you will deliver your project – looking for a clear and viable plan.

We'll consider your skills and track record. We'll assess how you have attempted to provide best value through the resources requested and the outcomes they'll achieve.

We want to support projects that have a clear and well-designed plan for making the project happen. The plan should demonstrate how the needs and motivations of the community have been factored into the design.

We expect projects to have considered how they can get the most out of the resources they need to deliver the project.

This means projects with clear and reasonable budgets that demonstrate how they have considered limiting waste and maximising value are more likely to be supported.

We can support new and existing organisations; however, we will only fund projects where the organisation and people responsible can demonstrate they have the skills and experiences to make their plans a reality.

As a distributor of public funding, we take this responsibility seriously and will only support projects where there is a strong track record or clear and reasonable plan to deliver the stated outcomes.

Our priorities

Even if your project meets our criteria, there may be situations where we have to make a difficult choice to prioritise.

We know that opportunities to be physically active depend too much on your background, your gender, and your postcode. We are committed to tackling this to provide the benefits of activity to everyone.

Therefore, we will prioritise Movement Fund applications which are:

  • focused on the needs of people less likely to be active; and
  • that are located in the places where more needs exist.
