Inclusion scenarios

How inclusive and accessible is your organisation? Explore our guidance, with practical inclusion scenarios to see how you would respond to real-life situations.

Inclusive values and practices sit at the heart of many successful clubs and community organisations. These organisations understand how to meet the needs of a diverse range of people and create opportunities for everyone to take part, or volunteer, in a place where they feel included, welcomed and valued.

However, barriers still exist, particularly for those who have one or more protected characteristic(s). These barriers can influence whether or not people continue to take part, or volunteer, in sport and physical activity and benefit from doing so.

It’s therefore vital that organisations know how to create inclusive environments, provide accessible opportunities and respond appropriately if any form of discriminatory behaviour occurs.

To support people in doing this, we’ve created a series of scenarios designed to help you and your organisation better meet the needs of different people and respond appropriately to any challenges that may be faced.

Each scenario covers a different topic, including: disability, economic exclusion, ethnicity, faith groups and rural exclusion, with scenarios on LGBTQ+ and women and girls coming soon.

What do the scenarios include?

The scenarios have been designed to reflect real life situations and include:

1
An introduction outlining who the scenario is about and their relationship with sport and physical activity.
2
A two or three-part storyline highlighting the different challenges or barriers faced. Each part offers three possible responses and explains the potential impact of each response on the individual featured.
3
Signposting to further advice, guidance and support related to the protected characteristic group featured.

How do you use the scenarios?

Working your way through the scenarios is simple; each one should take around 10 minutes to read. To access a scenario, click on the relevant link below.

Move through each scenario using the ‘next’ or ‘previous’ buttons at the end of the page and, once completed, click the ‘return to scenarios home page’ link to view the other scenarios available.

As you read through each scenario, consider how you would respond to each situation. Once you’ve reviewed all the possible responses, click on the dropdown of your most likely response to see the impact of your chosen approach.

Responses are not monitored; be honest with yourself to get the most value from this learning experience and engage with the further resources linked if you feel it will support your onward learning and responses in real life.
