We want the Movement Fund to be flexible, to ensure that the needs of communities are central to the design and delivery of your project.
This means that there isn’t one way to deliver a project. However, based on experience and evaluation, we generally find successful projects are doing at least one of these things:
-
1. Setting up new experiences or activity sessions for people to get involved
We want to support projects that create positive, engaging opportunities to help people become more active.

Setting up new experiences or activity sessions for people to get involvedThis means identifying the skills and experience needed to deliver effective sessions, providing an environment that supports participation, and designing activities that reduce barriers and reflect the needs of the community you serve.

2. Helping improve or create new spaces for people to be active in – or providing the equipment they need to do the activity
Fit-for-purpose and modern facilities are important for engaging people in physical activity. We want to support projects that are improving spaces or creating new areas for more people to be active in.

Helping improve or create new spaces for people to be active in – or providing the equipment they need to do the activityWe also support projects that are improving their provision of equipment, which either directly supports activity delivery, or improves the ability to maintain a facility so more activity can take place.
We have seen how much the community supports these tangible improvements. Therefore, projects focused on facilities or equipment are likely to receive a pledge award.

3. Improving environmental sustainability and providing physical activity opportunities
We know that the places and spaces we use to be active are threatened by the effects of climate change – whether it’s reduced water and air quality, rising temperatures, or extreme weather events such as flooding, drought and heatwaves.

Funding could help you install LED bulbs and automatic controls or sensors to reduce usage, introduce solar panels or even micro wind turbines.
All of these can help keep costs down, thereby enabling you to keep participation costs low and ensure financial accessibility for lower-income groups, or to extend the operating hours to enable more people to take part.

4. Supporting organisations to build their capacity and capability so they can help the people in their community to be active
We understand that local community organisations play a vital role in supporting people to be active.
Read more about 4. Supporting organisations to build their capacity and capability so they can help the people in their community to be activeTraditionally run on small margins, minimal cash reserves and voluntary time, Covid-19 pushed the resilience of organisations to the limit.
We will support community organisations to be more agile and resilient by, for example, building innovation and digital capabilities, encouraging and supporting continuous improvement in governance, and driving towards more diverse and inclusive practices that can support the organisation’s ability to provide more effective and sustainable activity opportunities.

5. Responding to emergencies that impact on people taking part in physical activity, and helping get activity happening again
Storms and major weather events don’t just damage our facilities and pitches; they limit opportunities for people to be active.
Read more about 5. Responding to emergencies that impact on people taking part in physical activity, and helping get activity happening againWe know that organisations impacted can experience short-term financial hardship or the ceasing of operations due to the crisis.
The Movement Fund is available to organisations that are struggling in the aftermath, to restore opportunities to play sport and get active in the worst-hit areas.
We'll prioritise funding to support sports and activities that need to recover quickly. Facilities where activity is not scheduled to take place for several weeks will be a lower priority for support.
