As part of our Active Lives Adult Survey, we ask people how, and how often, they are physically active.
Analysis of the number of people engaging in activities at least twice in the last 28 days helps us understand the contribution of different activities to overall levels of activity.
On this page you'll find information about six activities with the largest participation figures - walking, cycling, running, fitness activities, swimming and football.
Here we begin with swimming, but information on the other activities is being collated and will appear on this page in due course.
Swimming
Our Active Lives Adult Survey data shows 201,000 fewer people swam at least twice a month in 2019 than was the case three years earlier, with a total of 4.7 million people regularly taking to the water.
To increase activity levels in swimming, we've invested in swim pilots across the country, the results of which are found in this section.
