Tracking public leisure's contribution to active communities

Sport England and the government recognise the vital role that gyms and leisure centres play in helping people to be active.

In order to fully understand this role, Moving Communities provides a real-time view of local authority facility performance, with benchmarking and filtering functionality, that explores financial performance alongside understanding how effective the service is and for whom, and its impact on local communities.

Moving Communities is driven by the largest data set ever gathered for the local leisure sector and was initially launched in March 2021 to support the National Leisure Recovery Fund, which has seen £100m of government funding support the leisure sector recover from the pandemic.

Working collaboratively, this data will enable local authorities, leisure providers and policymakers to understand their performance and how this compares with national, operational and nearest neighbour benchmarks.

The insight will inform strategic decisions about where time, effort and money are best invested to benefit local communities and the audiences most in need of help.

Data will also be turned into insights, with tools being able to measure the wider social impacts of physical activity taking place at leisure centres, based on the latest research from Sheffield Hallam Sports Industry Research Centre.
