Tim Hollingsworth leaves role as chief executive

The driving force behind our Uniting the Movement strategy concludes his time with us after more than six years.

31st July 2025

Tim Hollingsworth has stepped down as chief executive of Sport England after nearly seven years in the role.

Having announced in February that he’d be leaving the organisation in the summer, Tim departs with the full support of chair Chris Boardman and our Board.

Our executive director of partnerships, Phil Smith, will be our interim chief executive until Tim’s permanent successor Simon Hayes takes up the post in September.

Tim Hollingsworth speaks from a lectern at an event.

"It has been the greatest of privileges for the past seven years to lead Sport England," wrote Tim in his farewell blog.

"With a fantastic chair in Chris Boardman, a great new CEO in Simon Hayes and a wonderful team of people in place, I have no doubt that the next stage of its delivery and the collective journey of Uniting the Movement will achieve amazing things."

Tim's legacy

We sat down with Tim to review his time at Sport England, discussing the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, how our role in supporting the sector has changed, and his hopes for the future of community sport and physical activity.

Tim joined us in November 2018 after seven years as the chief executive of the British Paralympic Association.

He was soon thrust into the challenge of leading the organisation’s response to Covid-19 – and determining how we would help the wider community sport and physical activity sector.

Under Tim’s guidance, we administered several funds to support professional sport, leisure centres and the many thousands of grassroots clubs and groups battling to stay afloat across the country.

Perhaps what will become Tim’s biggest legacy came while were still in the grip of pandemic lockdowns, in January 2021, when we launched our 10-year strategy, Uniting the Movement.

It was, and still is, our bold vision to tackle inactivity, promote physical activity and transform lives by bringing the sector together and empowering local communities to take action.

This emphasis on collaboration has been a hallmark of Tim’s tenure, during which we’ve shifted from being a traditional funding body to one focused on working in long-term partnership with other organisations to maximise the impact of our support.

In the wake of Covid-19, he drove a revolution of our investment strategy that means our core partners receive funding for up to five years, providing them with upfront certainty and financial security as they work with us to achieve our collective goals.

We've since committed up to £250 million of National Lottery and Exchequer funding into partnerships with more than 90 places across England that have the highest inactivity levels and other social need indicators.

More recently, Tim oversaw the launch of the Movement Fund, a new single point of access to our funding that makes it easier for organisations to apply and has opened it up to new audiences.

He’s been a leading voice in the fight to drive racism out of sport, a powerful champion of disability rights and a strong advocate of community and school sport.

And above all, he’s worked tirelessly to confront the deep-rooted inequalities that continue to prevent too many people from accessing the life-changing benefits of being active.

Tim leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Sport England.
