Together Fund

This fund existed to help to reduce the negative impact of coronavirus and help community groups working with our target audiences to grow and help more people.

About the fund

The Together Fund was a continuation of the Tackling Inequalities Fund that was set up in April 2020 as part of our support package to help the sport and physical activity sector through the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis.

It saw another £20 million of National Lottery funding committed to help the groups that, from our insight, we could see were being disproportionately affected by the pandemic and it was significantly impacting their ability to be physically active.

TIF's £20m was invested in four key audiences and the money from the Together Fund was spent in the same way - these priority audiences were:

  • Lower socio-economic groups
  • Culturally diverse communities
  • Disabled people
  • People with long-term health conditions.

TIF enabled community groups to continue to exist and engage with their communities, supporting people to be engaged and active.

Our approach

This was a targeted fund that was designed to deal with the issues caused as a result of coronavirus and aimed to support community organisations working with priority audiences, so they had a future to plan for.

TIF support intended to meet both immediate need and the early recovery stages, up until December 2022.

The Together Fund support was designed to enable further recovery and growth up until March 2023.

In order to reach those who needed our help the most, we knew we needed to do things differently. We knew partners we're working with had an extensive network and reach to local community organisations, and often those who may not usually be reached through our own direct channels.

This includes our network of 43 Active Partnerships and more than 30 national partners, who we knew could help to connect funding to where it's needed locally, utilising their expertise, connections and local insight.

While the need for this funding was being defined locally, the types of activity funded included:

  • funding for community groups to find new ways to support people to be active
  • offering advice and training support
  • increasing resilience, capacity and capability of delivery bodies.

Our story so far

In order to do things differently we knew we had to think differently about how we understand and share the learning and impact we're creating together.

We focused on creating opportunities for everyone involved to tell their own story of how TIF is making a difference.

Bringing together the story of our collective work and the impact it had, painted a picture of what really mattered, in order for the voices of the people doing the work to be heard.

To find out more about our collective story over the first 12 months of TIF, we brought together a short video and presentation to share some of our key learnings and impact.
