The Priory City of Lincoln Academy

Case study about accessing external funding

Academy part of the Priory Federation of Academies Trust
Funding programme: Inspired Facilities 2011/12

Award: £150k

Project: The project aimed to increase sustainable participation through making the 1970s Sports Centre more accessible to the whole community. This involved refurbishing the swimming changing facilities and creating dry changing rooms inside the building to service the Gym and Fitness Suite.

As part of the bid process the school carried out a survey of over 900 adults from the local community and found that 35% of people rated the current quality of changing facility as very poor, with 33% rating them as poor. The number one reason for people not using the facilities was inadequate changing facilities with 94% of the people saying that they would be more likely to use the sports centre if the changing rooms were fully refurbished and modernised.

How has it made a difference?

The project has created a better sporting experience for users while reducing running costs.
The school have been able to significantly increase the number of visitors per year helping to ensure the long term viability of the Sports Centre. The Year 1 Target for the project was to reach 23,000 community users and this was exceeded by 635.
The community offer includes a range of activities for a broad spectrum of participants including twelve local primary schools, Lincoln Pentaqua Swimming Club, Newark Canoe Clubs, Lincoln Soccer Academy and Hartsholme Runners.

Our top funding tips for other schools:

Ensure that you have dedicated sufficient time to prepare the bid. It is best to work with a small, committed team with clear responsibilities, areas of specialism and one leader.
