Case study about accessing external funding

Academy Converter, Mixed

Funding Programme: Inspired Facilities 2012/13

Award: £20,415

Project: This was a two stranded project to enhance the school’s sports facilities and enable more community groups to have access to the facilities.
Part 1) Floodlighting for the existing All Weather Pitch.
Part 2) Replacement of existing sports hall flooring.
The total project costs were a little over £40,000 and match funding was provided by the school and some of their partner organisations.

How has it made a difference?

The All Weather Pitch can now be used up until 9pm Monday-Saturday providing additional facilities for local youth and adult groups including Worthing Town Football Club. The sports hall with its new flooring now provides a safe and high quality experience with lettings increased from 24 hours per week to 48 hours per week. The range of opportunities on offer include Volleyball, Cheerleading and Judo.

The Year 1 Target for the project was to reach 23,000 community users, and this target was exceeded by 1,215.

Our top funding tips for other schools:

  •  Spend time finding out what your community needs. The best projects blend the requirements of a wide range of potential users of your facilities to maximise usage rates.
  • Use the support materials provided on the Sport England website – these will help you budget, plan and implement your project successfully.
  • Maximise the publicity support provided by Sport England once the grant is approved to help you gain additional marketing opportunities for your facilities.
