Clubhouses

This suite of information is intended to help clubs and their design teams work through and apply general principles to create better clubhouses

Clubhouse buildings are often small in scale and shared on a multi-sports community basis. They are essential elements in the sporting landscape and it is important that they are designed, operated and maintained well.

Clubhouse design guide

If you are considering designing a new clubhouse or refurbishing existing facilities, the animated walkthrough films below will help guide you through the process.

These films take a virtual walk through a new and refurbished clubhouse and highlight some of the basic design ideas that will help you to make the best of your facility.

Covering project management, design, refurbishment and sustainability, this guidance is intended to supplement our existing design guidance. In addition to the films, we have also produced detailed guidance on project management and design.

For enquiries regarding specific sports, we also recommend contacting the appropriate national governing body of the sport.

The panels listed below break the design into some specific subject areas. These are provided to help club members and designers to explore, discuss and explain the specific needs of the club and the nature of the site.

They should ideally be printed at A3 size and can be used to develop your design brief and help explain your ideas to others.

Case studies

As part of the Improvement Fund programme, Sport England has provided financial support to a number of projects for a variety of environmental upgrades.

The initiatives vary considerably from the fitting of LED lighting to hydro-electric power, but all are anticipated to provide significant reduction in energy use and costs. These initial studies, to be published soon, will provide an overview of the type of intervention being considered and the anticipated savings.

Over the next 12 months these projects will be revisited to check on progress and measure the outputs and outcomes.
