Economic Importance of Sport
The Economic Importance of Sport in Yorkshire and the Humber 2000-2005 is the latest report commissioned by Sport England as a part of an ongoing commitment to highlight the economic value of sport to the region.

Conducted by The Sport Industry Research Centre (SIRC) at Sheffield Hallam University, the report shows the economic influence of sport in the Yorkshire and Humber region from 2000-2005, and demonstrates how the value of sport to the regional economy has developed.

The evidence presented in the report is primarily based around national income accounting and focuses on the monetary process of income and expenditure flows from various sub sections of the economy. These accounts are then used to derive estimates for sport specific economic indicators.

A summary of the Yorkshire & Humber findings is as follows:

•Consumer expenditure on sport in 2005 was £1,725 million, or 2.9% of total consumer expenditure.

The largest market share of consumer spending on sport was gambling (£442 million, 25%).  Other major categories within consumer spending were; sport clothing and footwear (£307 million, 18%) and participation and subscription fees (£306 million, 18%).

•Nearly 9% of consumer expenditure is accounted for by sport-related spending on TV and related subscriptions, highlighting the role of sport in creating employment in the commercial non-sport sector.

•Sport-related economic activity in 2005 contributed £1,520 million or 1.9% of the regional GDP of Yorkshire and Humber. The majority of this was generated by the commercial non-sport sector (£854 million, 56%).

•Regional sport-related employment in 2005 was 47,200 or 2.0% of total regional employment.

•Sport has experienced a growth in economic importance between 2000 and 2005 resulting in a higher share of consumer expenditure (+0.6%), regional product (+0.3%) and employment (+0.4%).

•The regional sports economy has been driven by sport-related investment aiming at urban regeneration

•Sport-related income and expenditure flows for 2005 have shown the majority of income is generated from the commercial non-sport sector (£809 million) and consumer sector (£754 million). The majority of expenditure in sport is related to the consumer sector (£1,725 million)
