Sports, Fitness and the Outdoors Training Survey – Yorkshire and Humber

The recent Workforce Development Surveys highlighted the lack of information available to our sector on the training and development opportunities that could be accessed by our workforce, whether paid or volunteer.

In order to address this problem, Sport England Yorkshire & the regional Learning & Skills Council are co-funding a research project to map sport sector training provision across the region. Yorkshire & the Humber is the first region to undertake a survey of this kind.  The research consists of two questionnaires, which we urge our partners to complete.

•        The employer/organisation questionnaire is for organisations (large or small) operating in the Sports, Fitness and Outdoors sector. The survey will help us to outline some of the barriers and limitations you face in finding training and development opportunities locally and accessing funding for training.
•        The training provider questionnaire is for everyone offering training and development opportunities to the Sports, Fitness and Outdoors sector. The survey will gather information on the demand for courses, measures taken to ensure quality, suitability and relevance and your level of engagement with employers.

You can access the surveys online or download them at www.skillsactive.com/SFO_survey

Over 800 organisations in Yorkshire took part in the Workforce Development Survey, which was completed in March 2007.  The survey findings have provided the Yorkshire sport sector with a good evidence base that begins to demonstrate the needs of the region's workforce, including:

Where are our skills shortages?
- Almost a third of the vacancies in paid posts are hard to fill, and include coaches and operational staff.
- Almost a quarter of vacancies in unpaid posts are hard to fill, and include coaches, sports officials and club officials.

What are our skills gaps?
The biggest training needs are for coaching, child protection, communication, leadership and management.

What does our workforce look like?
- Coaches and operational staff are the largest group in the paid workforce.
- Coaches and officials are the largest group in the voluntary workforce

All four County Sports Partnerships in Yorkshire produced their Workforce Development Plans by the end of March, supported by the findings from the survey.  These initial plans will now be worked up into a programme of projects to deliver against the identified needs and priorities for each CSP area.
