We want more people in Yorkshire and Humber to enjoy the benefits of physically active lives.
There is now extensive and conclusive evidence on the health benefits of physical activity. Physical activity reduces the risk of premature death and in particular, risks associated with England's number one killer - cornonary heart disease.
The British Heart Foundation recently published data estimating that 37% of cornonary heart disease deaths can be attributed to physical inactivity, compared with 19% from smoking.
In England 63% of men and 75% of women are not active enough to benefit their health.
But physical activity is not only an increasingly important disease prevention public health issue (Wanless, 2004), it also serves to meet the economic, social and community needs of the population and contributes to a range of wider cross-cutting objectives that play a significant part in contributing to the economic and community vitality of our region.
This Framework has been developed by the Yorkshire and Humber Physical Activities Coordination Team. It is designed to increase coherence between orgnisations and strategies, to help improve the quantity and quality of physical activity opportunities, and get more people more active more often.
