The Midlands rewards sporting achievement
The West Midlands honoured its sports stars on Sunday 7 December, at the BBC Midlands Sports Awards 2008. For the second year Sport England in the West Midlands sponsored a special award, the Power of Sport (POS) Award, which recognises excellence in delivering community sports projects that make a real difference to local people.
We are very pleased to announce that the Active Meadowlands project in Coventry picked up the 'BBC Power of Sport Award 2008' and we congratulate all those involved in this excellent project.

The 'Power of Sport Award 2008'
Sport England in the West Midlands sponsored and delivered the 'BBC Power of Sport Award' to ensure that community sports projects receive the attention and accolades they so rightly deserve.
The 6 county sports partnerships in the region each nominated a project to go forward through a selection process supported by their partners. The six projects that were in contention for the 2008 award were:
Active Meadowlands (Coventry) - nominated by Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire Sport

Birmingham Schools Rowing Project - nominated by Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Partnership
ONE OF TWO RUNNERS UP FOR THE AWARD
Sport in the Hood (East Staffordshire) - nominated by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent
Tennis: Stronger Mind and Body – Bishop’s Castle LTC (Shropshire) - nominated by Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin

Wolverhampton Moving the Goalposts Satellite Sports Project - nominated by the Black Country Sports Partnership
Worcestershire Playground to Podium Project - nominated by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire
The awards evening was a great success and the six POS nominees should all be congratulated on their achievement. We hope that each of them will celebrate that their work for community sport has been recognised in this way.

Launched in June 2008, this 3-year strategy outlines how SE will develop community sport in England with the aims to: grow, sustain and excel.

SMS in the West Midlands
Sport England has developed nineteen sporting segments to help us understand the nation's attitudes and motivations – why they play sport and why they don’t. We have produced maps for the nineteen segments for each of our six CSP area, all of our local authority areas and for the region as a whole.

County sports partnerships
The region now has the infrastructures in place at sub regional level, through these new strategic partnerships, to drive forward the key outcomes of increasing sports participation, developing community sport and widening access for under represented groups. It will be a challenging time for all concerned and we wish all the partnerships every success for the future.
