The following information provides a guide to research impacting on the development of sport and active recreation in the West Midlands, in some case there is link to a dedicated page on the topic. There is more information on national research that impacts on sports and physical activity on the main Sport England website.
There is also information on the DCMS & its partner organisations' 'Taking part' survey that went 'live' in July 2005, on their website.
Sport England's 'Active People' survey
The first tranche of this survey was completed in November 2006 and the data made available in December 2006. It supplies participation and volunteering figures based on a sample size of 1,000 people over 18 years of age per local authority area in England. This information supplied all local authorities in the West Midlands with detailed data.
The survey is now into the second tranche (smaller sample size) - collecting data from October 2007 to October 2008 (estimated that this information should be issued November 2008).
Please view the Active People web pages for more information.
A further development, using data from the survey alongside that of other surveys and data resources, is the Sporting Market Segments work (SMS) - released last year and now extensively being used by partners to inform their own marketing campaigns.

West Midlands Lifestyle Survey 2005
The largest survey of people in the West Midlands since the 2001 Census started on Monday 17 January 2005. It was launched by the West Midlands Regional Observatory (WMRO) and West Midlands Public Health Observatory and is being conducted by the Birmingham based BMG Research.
The West Midlands Regional Lifestyle Survey asked about important topics including health, education, quality of life and community safety. It promised to be the largest and most comprehensive survey of its type ever undertaken in the region.
The work was completed at the end of May 2005, the data resulting from the survey was available to funding partners in mid-July. A full launch of the survey results took place WMRO's Annual Event in October 2005.
