New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!

A new Sport England lottery-funded project is set to boost the number of young people in Hyndburn getting active, getting training & qualifications, and getting involved in their communities through sport.
Run by not-for-profit Youth Action @ Hyndburn, the three year project will include taster and training sessions in non-traditional sports from kabbadi to outdoor pursuits; a sport based mentoring scheme; and opportunities to get involved in volunteering and coaching. Aimed at 14-25 year olds, the activities will be particularly focussed on hard to reach groups and on girls in the area.
The project is made up of four parts:
● Adventure Girls will introduce a group of young girls to outdoor pursuits through taster sessions in various activities. The girls will choose which activity to get further training in then will be put through a professional Outdoor Industry course so they can coach other young people in the future.
● Caged Football will, in partnership with the local police force, establish a series of mini football leagues across the region in which young people can submit a team which will then become their own responsibility to manage and run.
● Urban Pursuits will give over 100 youngsters the chance to take part in non-traditional sports, such as cycling, rounders, martial arts and kabaddi, as well as providing training for volunteers
● Peer Coaching is a mentoring scheme which uses sport as a focal point to help young people overcome difficulties in life, and to create a healthy lifestyle.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director for Sport England, commented: “Sport is a powerful tool in enriching lives and bringing together communities. This project will improve the lifelong health, skills, confidence and employability of young people in Hyndburn.
“Our Active People survey shows that only 19% of adults in Hyndburn currently take part in the recommended minimum 3 x 30 minutes of exercise a week. Thanks to this project and Sport England’s investment, many more young people will reap the benefits of being healthier and more active for life.”
Rachael McHugh, Sports Coordinator from Youth Action @ Hyndburn, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop their skills, make new friends and improve their lifestyles through sport and physical activity. This project will have far reaching benefits across Hyndburn by developing young people as positive role models for others, demonstrating to their communities that young people are talented, co-operative individuals with a lot to offer society, who will flourish if given the opportunity and resources to do so”.
