New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!
Andy Burnham MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport joined a host of sporting and local council dignitaries at Manchester Velodrome for a high profile event to launch the official London 2012 pre-Games Training Camp Guide, which includes 73 North West venues.
Sport England’s Regional Director, Stewart Kellett hosted the event, along with Rob Young, North West Co-ordinator of the 2012 North West Steering Group, and Olympic athletes Sarah Storey and Beth Tweddle.
The Manchester Velodrome event was one of five launches which took place across the region, celebrating the North West’s world-class facilities, and heralding the region as a centre of sporting excellence.
Andy Burnham MP said of the event: “It is fantastic news that so many sporting facilities in the North West have met the strict criteria to be included in this Training Camp Guide. This offers up a real opportunity for communities across this region – and the whole of the country – to feel the excitement of being part of the Games in Britain. And this is a chance too for towns and cities to forge strong international links and sell their sporting venues on the world stage. I wish each and every one of them luck.”
Launch events also took place at Liverpool Aquatics Centre, Merseyside; Cumberland Sports Arena, Cheshire; Kendal Judo Club, Cumbria and Preston Sports Arena, Lancashire.
The North West’s high-quality, elite-standard sporting venues will be available for use by athletes from all over the world in the lead up to the London 2012 Games, and inclusion in the guide marks an important sporting legacy for the communities where the venues are situated.
The guide includes several major football grounds and training grounds, equestrian centres and other swimming pools, sport centres, martial arts centres and gymnasiums across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cumbria, Cheshire and Lancashire appear in the directory, including: Aintree Racecourse for equestrian, Anderton Centre in Bolton for canoeing and kayaking, Bury Football Club, Bolton Lads and Girls Club for boxing, Platt Fields Park for BMX and Blackpool Sports Centre.
