New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!
Lottery funding will boost the expansion of Roefield leisure facilities in Edisford Road, Clitheroe. The grant of £195,000 consists of a £120,000 towards the capital build cost and a further £75,000 revenue support over three years which will fund a sports development and facility manager position.
The Sport England Lottery award is in addition to grants and financial support already secured via RVBC; Clitheroe the Future; NWDA and the Bowland Charitable Trust which together amounts to a total match-funding of £1.1million.
The expansion plan is in two phases starting with phase one during July and August. The existing oversubscribed gym will receive a complete makeover together with 46 brand new cardiovascular and resistance equipment, offering state of the art facilities to local people. The new Fitness Suite opening in August will be complemented with fully integrated television screens on cardio vascular equipment offering up to 12 fitness programmes proven to make working out more enjoyable than ever before.
Phase two is currently going through planning and managers hope that work can begin in the Autumn. Roefield, which began as a humble corner shop, is being transformed into a leisure superstore, offering affordable sports and fitness programmes for the whole community.
The expansion will enable Roefield to expand the range of sport and recreation activities offered and increase participation. In particular, increasing its programme of organised activities for young people; families; and the over 50’s.
The 25% increase in capacity means developing the existing oversubscribed fitness and aerobic suite with the addition of a mini-gym specifically aimed at the over 50’s, and at young people. It will also accommodate special needs such as those referred to a gym by their GP.
Stewart Kellett, Sport England’s Regional Director for the North West:
‘Sport England is proud to support Roefield as a community hub for sport and fitness. Investing in the centre will benefit the whole community in Clitheroe and beyond.’
The Centre Manager Tony Rodia says:
‘This not for profit organisation has gone from a barn to a thriving bustling commercially minded business and has still retained its core values of ensuring access for all to sport and recreation. At the same time it holds its own against private competition. It is a fitting tribute to those early pioneers, the tin can collectors and the hundreds of people who bought a brick for Roefield way back in 1985 when the Ribble Valley Sport and Recreation was officially registered as a registered charity. And it recognises the commitment of staff and loyal customers alike in supporting Roefield, making it a wonderful community success story.’
