Mentors needed to tackle social exclusion through sport
Could you help young people turn their lives around through sport? Nacro, the crime reduction charity, is launching an exciting new Sport Inclusion Project in Greater Manchester this summer and is recruiting mentors now.
The project is mainly funded through a £169,000 award from Sport England. It aims to tackle issues of social exclusion amongst disadvantaged young people by increasing their access to sports and leisure activities. The project will also provide opportunities for volunteering and learning.
Mentors are needed to help the young people, aged 13 to 18, to access the facilities and support them coming into sports clubs. Many of the young people involved will have experienced difficulties at school or been in trouble for their behaviour, and will require additional support. The clubs will also get support.
Research shows how individual sports and leisure clubs have been working successfully to target harder-to-reach people within the local community, and the project will expand this work much further.
Mentors should be aged 18 and over and could come from a wide range of backgrounds, with an interest in helping young people and improving local communities. By encouraging young people and their families into sports and volunteering Nacro aims to reduce antisocial behaviour and crime across Greater Manchester. Nacro provides training and support to the team of Mentors, as well as payment for each session.
The project is funded by Sport England with additional funding from the Department of Health and Lancashire MAPS.
Project mentors will play a vital role in the success of this project. They will provide first-hand support to the young people, helping them to get involved in sports clubs and encouraging their personal development. The mentors will also support the clubs in learning to become more inclusive.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director Sport England NW said: “Sport England’s work with local authorities, clubs and Nacro shows us the power of sport to help changes lives and communities. If you’re into sport and supporting your community then becoming a mentor is a worthwhile and exciting opportunity.”
Luke French, Nacro’s Sports Inclusion Officer, said:
“This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to make a positive difference in the lives of disadvantaged young people and to improve their local community.
“Project mentors are essential for the success of this project – by supporting the young people, their families and the sports clubs. We are now recruiting for mentors to fill roles across Greater Manchester so please get in touch for more information.”
To apply or for more information contact Luke French, Sports Inclusion Officer, on 01524 596552 or 07771 661063.
