Lifestyle Sports and National Sport Policy: An Agenda for Research

Life is for living, not for sitting still and growing old! Research into older people activity was commissioned in summer 2007 by Wiltshire & Swindon Activity & Sports Partnership (WASP) on behalf of Sport England and undertaken by Age Concern Wiltshire with support from the ‘Beyond the Immediate Research and Consultation Team’ (BTI R&CT). It builds on existing research with older people which had been undertaken nationally (Active People data) and locally (‘Beyond the Immediate’ a study of over 50s in Wiltshire). The key aim was to gain greater understanding of their motivation to be more active and the barriers to doing so for those living in Wiltshire. The findings will be of immediate relevance to an exciting, new initiative for all age groups in Wiltshire - ‘Connecting Communities through Sport and Activity”, a project which has received major funding from Sport England over 3 years for launch in autumn 2007. It is also possible to download a seminar summary and a ‘guidance checklist’, a tool for professionals to use for benchmarking their physical activity initiative targeted at the older adult against the BHFNC guidelines.

Evaluation guidance for National Governing Bodies of sport
In June 2008, Sport England published its new strategy for 2008-2011 to get more people playing and enjoying sport and to help those with talent get to the very top. Sport England will work closely with the National Governing Bodies of sport (NGBs) to deliver the new strategy, and will also create strong partnerships with local authorities. As part of the commissioning process with NGBs, the Sport England Research Team will be putting together two guidance documents to support them in the preparation of their plans. The first guidance document will contain advice on measuring the impact of interventions. It will set out the reasons for measuring impact, quality standards for measuring impact, guidance on setting up an effective monitoring and evaluation system, details of the Sport England evaluation framework, and information about how to collect and use data. The second will pull together lessons on 'what works' drawing in particular from evaluative evidence from the Active England programme.
