The Charitable Incorporated Organisation
The CIO is a new legal form for charities, and the first incorporated legal form designed specifically with the needs of charities in mind. It will be available only to charities and will add to the existing range of forms that charities can use. The Office of the Third Sector (OTS) and the Charity Commission are seeking responses to a consultation on the detailed legal framework for CIOs from those who will use the CIO model and those who will work with CIOs. The consultation will be open until 10 December 2008. Find out more.

Sport, Physical Activity and Renewal Toolkit

Renewal.net have published a section in their sport, physical activity and renewal sport toolkit. The new section, Physical activity and educational attainment, identifies that physical education, sport and physical activity can contribute towards raising educational standards and aspirations among young people and adults within both a school and community setting. However this contribution is not being fully realised in many renewal areas.  This toolkit aims to raise the awareness of this and provide a starting point for anyone wishing to ensure that sport fully contributes to raising educational attainment in a renewal area.

Awards for All England small grants to change
Awards for All England, the Big Lottery Fund's small grants programme, will change from a joint grants programme to one run by the separate distributors. Awards for All England is currently a joint Lottery grants programme supported by Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. Following a review of the programme, each of the lottery distributors supporting the scheme will run their own small grants programmes from 1 April 2009. Applications can still be made under the current arrangements until Awards for All England closes on 31 March 2009. The Big Lottery Fund says that the new system "will mean that each distributor can better address the needs of their applicants and the themes they support". It added that "it is anticipated that new money available for small grants in 2009-10 will be comparable to money that was available to community groups through Awards for All in 2008-2009". The new separate small grants programmes are as follows:

Funding sport in your community
Following the launch of its new strategy, Sport England launched a formal, public consultation which ran for twelve weeks from 25 June to 16 September 2008 and asked for views on three issues:

  1. How we use our National Lottery funding in the best way
  2. How we can improve our application and award processes
  3. If there are particular features of the Community Investment Fund that you value or features we should ensure that we do not replicate in any new arrangements.
