RYDE ROWING CLUB SCOOPS CCSP TOP PRIZE | NEW REGIONAL DIRECTOR | SUCCESSFUL BID FOR WELL-BEING

Sport England announces the appointment of Judith Dean as Regional Director for the South East Region.

Judith joins the government’s partner organisation for community sport from the health sector, where she was Director of Commissioning for Buckinghamshire Primary Care Trust.

A nurse by profession, Judith has undertaken a wide range of roles within the National Health Service. She joins Sport England following the successful engagement of key stakeholders in service redesign and the purchase of evidence-based health care for patients in Buckinghamshire.

Judith’s experience of working in the public service environment, accountability for the expenditure of public money and collaborating with key partners to deliver challenging targets will be invaluable in her new role as Regional Director.

She will spearhead the region’s ambition to boost the number of people over the age of 16 taking part in sport for thirty minutes, three times a week by 300,000 by 2012. Judith will be instrumental in investing Sport England’s resources, in promoting sport to people in the seven counties of the South East and in engaging key stakeholders.

Judith says: “I am delighted to be joining Sport England. I firmly believe that sport and active lifestyles are a key part of improving the health and well-being of the population and I look forward to the challenges of increasing participation in community sport across the South East”

Judith joins an established management team in the regional office, latterly managed by Lisa O’Keefe, who is promoted to Deputy Regional Director.

The Deputy Regional Director position will equip Sport England South East to address the specific needs of the dense and widespread region and support Judith in driving forwards the Active People participation challenge.

Lisa O’Keefe says: “I would like to welcome Judith to Sport England South East. She joins the organisation at an exciting time, where we are primed to embrace the Active People Challenge, and ensure the South East continues to drive up participation and build on its stronghold as the most active region in England.

“Sport England South East is equipped to support all other organisations responsible for the delivery of sport across the region. By advising, promoting and investing in community sport, we can help create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to lead an active lifestyle, while working towards our shared ambition of getting 300,000 more people engaged in sport by 2012.”

Mary McAnally, Chair of Sport England South East’s Regional Sports Board says: “With the two appointments, the region has a strong team in place to boost participation in community sport. Lisa O’Keefe has successfully led the regional office on an interim basis, and can build on this work in her new role.

“Judith’s knowledge of the region and health sector experience is an ideal foundation upon which her career with Sport England can build. I look forward to working alongside the new South East Senior Management team to strengthen our position and shape a strategy to advise, promote and invest in community sport.”

Judith takes up the Regional Director post on 20 August 2007.

Notes to Editors

Sport England is working to create an active nation through sport, providing advice to partners, investing in community sport and promoting sport and its benefits. Our aim is to have two million people participating more in sport by 2012, with a specific focus on hard to reach groups that are currently under-represented. Sport England is a non-departmental public body that distributes both Lottery and public funding to develop community sport.

Sport England has nine Regional Sports Boards (RSBs), each made up of experts from areas such as business, local government, sport, health and education. RSBs provide the strategic lead for sport in their regions and distribute investment for community sport.
