The Active People Survey collects information on a number of indicators to enable us to get an insight into how physically active the nation is. The data gives Local Authorities, County Sports Partnerships and Primary Care Trusts important benchmark information to help drive increases in the number of people who take part in sport and physical activity. This relates to the National Framework for Sport target to increase participation in sport by 1% per year.

These pages are deigned to hold all the analysis completed in the South East region by both Sport England and our partners. This top page holds all South East-wide analysis whilst there is one page relating to each County Sports Partnership, holding all analysis relevant to the sub-region.

Active People Challenge
To reach its target of 1% increase in participation year on year to 20132, the South East must increase participation on three days a week of 30 minutes moderate intensity amongst priority groups by 300,000 people.

The Active People Challenge publication sets out a picture of participation across the region, based on the findings of a flagship national survey conducted by IPSOS MORI on behalf of Sport England. The results form a sophisticated evidence base with which all players across the Delivery System, including Sport England, can take a structured approach to meeting the Active People Challenge. The data can inform the allocation of funding, shape interventions and be interrogated and analysed down to the local authority level using an online tool, the Active People Diagnostic. Potential applications include informing local area agreements, policy development and driving the efficiency of third-party data.

Background Information
The Active People Survey is a national survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of Sport England. The survey began on 14th October 2005 and ran until October 2006 surveying over 354,000 households on a range of questions relating to sport and active recreation. This equates to 1,000 completed questionnaires per Local Authority. The survey is telephone- based and is conducted over a full year to take account of seasonal variations in participation. The survey will be repeated in three years time to enable the tracking of changes from the baseline data.

New Functionality
Market Segmentation
This looks to split the population into 19 segments, each with similar relationships to sport. One of the benefits will be the capacity to match a project area with a segment and so establishing the probability of the targeted people to participate and in which sports they are likely to participate.

Small Area Estimates
Utilising synthetic multi-level mapping, estimates will be made down to super output level for 3x30 participation. This can be used for targeting investments but not for measuring changes over time. More
