The Respect Athlete Mentoring Programme (RAMP) is part of the Government’s Youth Mentoring Scheme. It uses the power of role models across a range of creative disciplines to inspire disadvantaged/disaffected young people. The Programme is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, delivered in community by Sport England (via their delivery agency Creating Excellence), and in education by the Youth Sport Trust.

The aim of the Programme is to engage with and create a sustainable change in young peoples behaviour. RAMP targets young people who are involved in, or at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour, aged 11 to 25. Between April 08 and March 09, between 50 and 100 mentoring packages will be delivered in the community engaging between 50 and 300 young people.

The young person will engage upon a unique journey with their Mentor to identify and overcome barriers to a change in attitudes and behaviour. The objective is for the Mentor to work with the young person to ensure that the change in behaviour can be sustained in the long-term.

The Mentors (all elite athletes of the past or present) will work with the young person for a period of approximately six months, meeting face-to-face and maintaining regular contact via email. The duration and intensity of the mentoring relationship is flexible dependent on the needs of the young person, but typically the Mentor would meet the young person for eight sessions, each generally lasting three hours.

The Programme is currently delivering in: Nottingham, Birmingham, Camden, Lambeth, Newham, Bradford, Sheffield, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, and Leeds.

Athlete Mentors: Bryan Steel, Nick Gillingham MBE, Courtney Fry, Dermot Gascoyne, Rachael MacKenzie, Tim Prendergast, Sam Coombes, Adam Whitehead, and Rob Tarr.
