The London 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for the Paralympic Games – which includes 25 North West sporting venues - was launched at by Seb Coe at the British Ambassador’s residence in Beijing on 15th September.
The Pre-Games Training Camp Guide contains 25 sporting venues and facilities in the North West which meet the standards required to host Paralympic teams and athletes in the run up to the London Games in 2012.
Published online, the Guide outlines 175 different venues from all over the country which are suitable training bases for each of the 20 Paralympic sports in 2012 as teams prepare for the Games.
Manchester leads the way with eight venues, including Sportcity (which incorporates the velodrome, national squash centre, regional athletics arena and regional tennis centre) Elsewhere the Manchester Aquatics Centre and Sugden Sports Centre (both Oxford Road), Belle Vue regional hockey centre and Amaechi Basketball Centre (Wilbraham Road) are also included on the list.
Wavertree leads the list of Liverpool venues with the Liverpool tennis, aquatics and athletics centres all being selected. Other venues in Liverpool include Aintree Racecourse, Greenbank Sports Academy in Sefton and the Litherland sports park.
Other areas to benefit include Bolton, Stockport, Crewe, Blackpool, Chester, Preston, Widnes and Wigan.
In addition to being available to elite Paralympians in the build up to 2012, each of the sporting venues continue to be used by members of the general public on a day-to-day basis.
London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe said: 'We said that we wanted the London Games to be for athletes, and the facilities listed in this Guide will really help overseas athletes prepare well. It also provides a great opportunity for towns throughout the UK to get involved in our plans.
'The process we have been through shows a great spread of high quality accessible facilities throughout the UK that can be used by elite level athletes. The new website will continue to be an asset to keep an up-to-date log of the elite facilities we have across the UK.'
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director for Sport England North West, commented: “It’s a fantastic tribute to the region that these venues have been included on such an elite list and it highlights the standard and quality of facilities available to our local communities. The North West has some of the most advanced training facilities in the country and we’ve already had enquiries from some of the strongest Paralympic nations in the world who would potentially like to use our facilities. Such recognition provides fantastic inspiration and a once in a lifetime opportunity for people of the North West to train alongside elite athletes.”
Developed by the London 2012 Organising Committee and VisitBritain, the directory website showcases the quality and variety of sport facilities in the UK capable of hosting elite Paralympic athletes. National Paralympic Committees choosing to base their athletes at one of these training camps are eligible to receive a financial award of up to £25,000 from LOCOG to assist with costs relating to Pre Games Training Camps.
