New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!
Sport England North West welcomes the announcement by Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly to increase the amount of funding to get 500,000 more 10 year-olds into cycling.
'The ‘Bikeability’ training scheme is great news for the North West. Our region is arguably the home of cycling with the National Velodrome in Manchester, vibrant cycling clubscene in Merseyside, bike-friendly cities and towns like Lancaster, superb rural cycle tracks across Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria;’ says Stewart Kellett, Regional Director, Sport England NW.
Government funding for cycling will increase to help get an extra 500,000 10 year-olds to take part in Bikeability cycle training by 2012, learning how to cycle safely.
It is a six-fold increase, and sees total cycling funding reach £140 million. It will also allow for another 250 Safe Links to School, which connect schools to the National Cycle Network, and create a further 10 Cycling Demonstration Towns which will give almost 3 million people the chance to benefit from best practice and promotion of cycling. Lancaster with Morecambe is a North West example of a Cycling Demonstration Town.
The increase forms part of a Government drive to tackle congestion and air quality, as well as creating more opportunities for people to exercise.
‘The North West can rightly claim to be the home of cycling’ says Stewart Kellett. ‘We have a passion for it. Nowhere else can you find the Britain's primary indoor Olympic cycle track and one of the world’s best and fastest board tracks. We are home to the Great Britain Cycling Team and we can be inspired by home grown talent like Chris Boardman. There are community based cycling clubs across the region and all welcome new members. We have great urban and rural routes to explore.’
‘Cycling has a special place in all our hearts. Most of us loved cycling as children; and you can recapture that excitement. Sustrans’ Connect2 project recently won the People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway, to invest in and cycling UK-wide. This additional funding for training comes at an exciting time for cycling!’
Ruth Kelly said: 'Being able to cycle safely is an important life skill and I want to give more children the opportunity to do it and encourage more adults to reach for their bikes. By 2012, I expect 500,000 more children to have been able to learn the necessary skills so that they cycle safely and responsibly. This will give parents reassurance that their children are suitably equipped to use the roads and enjoy their bikes.'
The funding package goes to Cycling England, the body set up by Government to promote cycling, to continue their successful work.
