Greater Manchester has experienced the largest growth of sporting volunteers in the North West, and the third largest growth in the UK, according to research from Sport England’s Active People survey.

The figures, released to mark national Volunteer Week (1 – 7 June) show that Greater Manchester has reported a 1.5% increase in sports volunteering, higher than any other region in the North West and the third highest increase in the whole of the UK.

Stewart Kellett, regional Director of Sport England North West, today paid tribute to Greater Manchester’s selfless and often unrecognised sporting heroes.

Stewart commented: “There are 59,000 people working in sport in the North West and an incredible 250,000 unpaid sporting volunteers. I think that one of the legacies from the Commonwealth games is Greater Manchester’s willingness to support young athletes and credit must go to the hard work of those volunteers who give up their time to make sport happen.”

Richard Saunders, Chief Executive, GreaterSport and the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership added:

"We are delighted to hear about the increase in people in the county who have followed their passion for sport and dedicated time to volunteering. Projects such as 'clubBURY' which recognises and rewards good practice in club development, are developed and delivered within the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership and will have undoubtedly been instrumental in achieving a rise in the percentage of sports volunteers.  We are lucky enough to work in a county that offers not only inspirational events such as the FINA World Swimming Championships for volunteers to get involved in, but some of the best community sports clubs in the country.  If we are honest, if you are looking to volunteer in sport, there is no better place to do it than Greater Manchester."

The Active people survey carried out by Sport England is the largest ever survey of sport and active recreation to be undertaken in Europe.

It provides by far the largest sample size ever established for a sport and recreation survey and will allow levels of detailed analysis previously unavailable. It identifies how participation varies from place to place and between different groups in the population, such as sports volunteers.

According to Sport England, these statistics are important as sports volunteers are vital for developing the next generation of sporting stars and for getting youngsters involved in sport at a young age.

One of these volunteers is Simon Tait, winner of, 'Volunteer of the Year' at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards. Simon comments:

"Being on the ground, volunteering at Uppermill Football Club in Oldham is unbelievably rewarding.  There is a large team of us who give up our time to support the club, and is it just great to hear that outside of the club and across Greater Manchester, even more people are giving up their time for sport.  Winning the Greater Manchester Award was great, and has really inspired me and my club to keep going.  It makes you realise that if it wasn't you there, on a Saturday morning helping out alongside a team of volunteers who love what they do, kids just wouldn't have the chance to get involved in sport outside of school.  Being a volunteer in sport is brilliant, you put a lot in, but you get so much out.  If anyone out there has a passion for sport, and wants to help out at your local sports club, you should definitely take the plunge. I can guarantee you that you'll love it!"
