‘Back to Netball’ players are whipping up a storm on Wirral netball courts. Women of all ages have been inspired by England Netball’s call to ‘come back to netball’. The result is new teams, lively coaching sessions, lots of laughter and a few changed lives.

Maria Yeates

Maria has been involved in the Wirral back to netball project from the start. A busy mum of three, she finds time to train and play three times a week. She joins in the training sessions at the sports centre and is a member of the ‘Shooting Stars’ local team, playing in league competitions. She has even been inspired to look at umpiring, which is great news for netball in her local area.

How did you find out about it?

I saw the advert and wanted to give it a go.

Did you play netball as girl?

Yes but this stopped when I was 14.

What’s your netball story?

It’s an escape for me from school runs and all the organising I have to do!

It’s great fun playing and it’s very social.

I feel younger, fitter and I have more energy. I’ll be running the Race for Life soon.

What would you say to a woman thinking about getting back into sport?

I say don’t look back! Go for it.

Emma Bradley

How did you find out about it?

I saw the ad in the sports centre and Dawn encouraged me to come along.

Did you play netball as girl?

I did play – but I am better now!

What’s your netball story?

I love coming to the training sessions for 3 hours on Sunday. And I play in a team – the Dollies. We play on Mondays and train once a week too.

I have made new friends and we’ll make some more at a netballing weekend that we’ve arranged at Pontins in Prestatyn!

Getting into netball has had a big impact on my life. As well as having fun and meeting new people I have lost weight and got more active encourages me to get involved in other sports. I am definitely not as tired as before.

What would you say to a woman thinking about getting back into sport?

Take a look. Turn up for the first session. No-one judges you, there’s no sniggers, just a group of women same as you.

Sherrill Tacy

Sherrill is 53. Not that any of her team mates believe her as she sprints, leaps and pivots around the netball court.

How did you find out about it?

A friend persuaded me along. I was nervous at first but I haven’t looked back.

Did you play netball as girl?

Gosh – 25 years ago I did!

What’s your netball story?

It’s a great confidence booster. My son has noticed that I am fitter and more active than ever,

Having coaches to train us really helps; I have really noticed the improvement in my skills since we started. I am now playing for the Dollies team and training twice a week.

I have always liked walking and I have noticed that my fitness has improved. I am going to do the Pennine Way so I can report back on what difference it has made!

What would you say to a woman thinking about getting back into sport?

It’s so much better than staying in and watching TV every night. If you go along to session like this you will be made to feel very welcome.

Emma Dalton

Emma is 27 and from Wallasey

Did you play netball as girl?

Yes but I haven’t played since I was 14 or 15

What’s your netball story?

I came along with a family friend so that we could get out of our houses and away from the TV. We have both got a lot out of playing – our game has improved a lot. And we have had a lot of fun. The atmosphere is very relaxed.

What would you say to a woman thinking about getting back into sport?

I am proof that it doesn’t matter if you haven’t play since you were 14! Take a friend along – and do it.

Laila Taylor

Busy mum of two Laila has found time for herself with Back to Netball sessions.

Did you play netball as girl?

I did play netball at school but when I saw the advert for these Back to Netball sessions and turned up I found that I couldn’t remember the rules from my school days.

What’s your netball story?

Getting back into netball has inspired me to get fitter in other ways too. Mind you, the netball itself is a hard work. I am training on Thursdays and Sundays. My little boys know that mum is playing sports, and I so think that helps to set a good example for them.

What would you say to a woman thinking about getting back into sport?

I would really encourage others to go along to a sessions. I believe in pushing yourself to be the best you can be.

Chloe Kerr

‘Chloe has a really great talent as a netballer’ say England Netball coaches Dawn and Liz.

‘She should have been playing club netball long ago; sometimes talent isn’t spotted in schools but it’s never too late.’

Luckily for Chloe the Back to Netball scheme offers another opportunity to fulfil her obvious sporting potential.

She is playing for the ‘Dollies’ one of the local league teams which is thriving since the ‘Back to Netball’ project inspired women to give the sport ‘another go’.

And fortunately for netball in the region, Chloe has decided not just to train and play but to qualify as a netball coach and help others into the game.

Now a level 2 qualified netball coach she has been inspired to consider a career in sports development.

An 2nd year undergraduate student at Liverpool John Moores University, Chloe is managing to combine her studies with playing and coaching practice. Unsurprisingly she is coach to her university netball team too.
