16th September
Chester’s young people will have the chance to get active thanks to a new project launched on 15th September at Christleton Sports Centre.
A group of year 10 girls from Christleton High School were the first to benefit from the STRIDE project, which is offering 12-week sessions of FREE activities at the Sport Centre and the Northgate Arena during school PE time.
Ian Tordoff, the Chester City Council's Sports Development Officer said: “STRIDE offers the chance to try new, fun activities that are a change from the traditional team games played in PE, which we know can put some youngsters off sport and activity.
“There will also be an element of learning about diet and fitness, to educate our young people at an early age about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
By the end of the two-year project, a selection of year 9 and 10 girls and boys from all the high schools in the Chester School Sport Partnership will have received specialised training and advice.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director of Sport England said: “Although our Active People survey shows that Chester is one of the most active areas in the country, nearly 75% of adults still aren’t taking part in the recommended minimum 3 x 30 minutes of sport and physical activity every week. Traditional PE team sports aren’t for everyone, so by creating opportunities for youngster to try and enjoy a range of different sport, the STRIDE project will be give them a chance to create a sporting –and healthy – habit for life. Sport England is delighted to be supporting this project, which will show Chester’s young people that you don’t necessarily have to be an Olympian to enjoy the benefits of sport.”
Judith Gilmour is the School Sport Partnership Co-ordinator for Christleton High School has said: “This is the second year the stride programme has been delivered at Christleton High School. We are very pleased to be given the opportunity for our students to take part. When we spoke to the children after the sessions last year they told us that they enjoyed the variety of activities. and the fact that they were given the opportunity to continue these activities with the use of the 12 week pass to Christleton and Northgate. This year our boys are also going to be given the opportunity to take part in the programme and we hope that they will also enjoy the range of activities available to them”.
Jon Kelly – Operations Manager for CADSART who manage Northgate Arena and Christleton Sports Centre said: ‘STRIDE is an excellent programme that educates young people on the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. CADSART as the largest provider of leisure facilities in Chester, is delighted to be a partner in the programme and looks forward to welcoming the young people into the centres and working with them on the programme over the coming months; hopefully helping them maintain their interest in fitness and health long after their association with STRIDE comes to an end’.
STRIDE is one of a number of projects funded by Sport England through the Chester Community Sports Network (CSN), established in 2006 to ensure we have a fit, active and healthy district.
Combined funding of £40,000 from Sport England, Chester City Council, Chester & District Sport & Recreation Trust (CADSART) and Chester School Sports Partnership supports the STRIDE project.
