New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!
In April 2007 the young sportsmen and women at Bury Gymnastics Club suffered a terrible blow when their facility at Goshen Leisure Centre was destroyed by fire.
Since then, all the gymnasts have had to train at various venues across Greater Manchester.
Sport England is supporting the club with £50,000 of funding from its Community Club Development Programme. The club, in partnership with Bury Council, has obtained a temporary lease on premises at Bury Bridge, which has now been fully refurbished. This will be the club’s new home for up to two years whilst plans are drawn up to build a new gymnastics centre. The funding from Sport England will be spent on much needed gymnastics equipment that can also be transferred to the new facility.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director, Sport England NW said: ‘Sport England is proud to get behind Bury Gymnastics Club. It is crucial that the club has a stable base and the right equipment. The lease on a 10,000 sq.ft. facility and the new equipment will help the club reach out to many more local children from all backgrounds; offer opportunities to people with disabilities and continue training the champions of the future.'
The funding helps the club rise up from the ashes of the fire to be stronger than ever in 2008. New development plans include: an expansion of the club’s pre- school gymnast programme, additional training courses for coaches, and a programme for club coaches to work in local schools
The club will be working closely with Greater Manchester Sports Partnership; Bury Council’s Sports Development team and Bury Primary Care Trust. Sport England is also on hand to offer specialist advice and support as the club grows.
David Bond, a member of the club’s Development Team said: ‘The support we have had from coaches, parents, Sport England, Bury Council and the local community has been fantastic. From being a club without a home in April 2007, we now have a superb sports facility that can be used by all ages and abilities. Everybody is welcome and children can participate in taster sessions that provide an introduction to the sport. The funding from Sport England has helped us to transform the club into one of the best gymnastics centres in the North of England’.
The club is working towards Sport England’s prestigious ‘Gym Mark’ award which incorporates best practice in child protection and equity policies.
