New Rugby League Volunteering Opportunities coming to the North West!
Sport England has announced a grant of almost a quarter of a million pounds will be made to sporting projects across Halton in order to increase sporting participation across the borough. The award was made to Halton’s Sport & Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) and will be broken down to support three local projects.
The largest award, of over £131,000, will help Halton’s Sports Participation Project to co-ordinate new and existing sports coaches and instructors deliver new community-coaching activities for groups and individuals in areas of greatest need.
Rugby League in the region will benefit from a grant of almost £45,000 (with an additional £21,000 coming from Rugby Football League) towards the appointment of a Rugby League Development Officer for a period of three years. The newly created post will see the co-ordination of rugby league, ensuring the development of structures to support the growth of the sport within the area and looking to increase the number of players and qualified coaches. This position will also support school and junior community rugby as well as match officials.
A further grant of over £60,000 has been made which will provide a major boost to sports volunteers and the development of clubs in Halton. This will assist the current sports club infrastructure and support its efforts to meet the requirements of NGB or local accreditation programmes. Workshops, training courses in club management and coaching will be delivered along with volunteer development programmes such as leadership awards and mentoring.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director for Sport England North West, commented: “We believe these awards will allow Halton to develop the whole range of its sporting provision. Community coaching activities, volunteers and rugby league will all benefit and will see the people of Halton benefit from some of the most comprehensive sporting provision within the North West. It’s vital that this funding is used to encourage participation and encourage as many people as possible to become active with sport.”
Terry Parle, Chair of Halton’s SPAA, said: “Professional support, guidance and advise to the voluntary sports sector is essential. Local people, especially young people rely on the hundreds of hours that dedicated individuals put in week in and week out to support local sport activity. This project provides workshops, training courses that support existing and new volunteers and coaches.”
Cllr Phil Harris, the Council’s Executive Member responsible for sport added “These grants are a result of local organisations and the Council working together and are a testimony to the strong sports partnership that has emerged in Halton. This funding will not only help improve participation in sport but contribute to improving Halton's health targets."
