North West on the Move is a plan for sport and physical activity, not a Sport England plan. Its formulation has involved national, regional and local consultations with key stakeholders, agencies and organisations across the private, public and voluntary sectors who fully understand the strategic issues and local needs of the region.

Sport and Active Leisure Skills and Productivity Plan for England’s Northwest 2005-2010
This report from SALSPA (the Sport and Active Leisure Skills and Productivity Alliance) highlights the sectors’ main training, skills, employment and business improvement needs in the north west. The report is an essential tool for the sector to use, in order to manage the potential and the growth of sport and active leisure in the region; take advantage of the nation’s focus on health and provide people with ample and accessible sport and leisure opportunities; target training and business support on those parts of the sector that perhaps need it most; capitalise on the sector’s confidence and optimism and promote it as a major contributor to the region’s economic, as well as social, health, educational and cultural lifeblood.

Culture Observatory for the North West
The Northwest Culture Observatory, launched on 6th October 2005, is a key driver of culture sector intelligence for the region. The key activities that the Cultural Observatory will engage are: information and data housing and signposting; data collection, research championing and comissioning; strategic intelligence and analysis in 'think tank' capacity.

Vital Signs assesses a wealth of data from established sources to provide you with an annual ‘State of the Region’ picture of the region’s performance, against a wide and comprehensive set of themes and indicators.

Value of Sport and the Economy
Sport England has published the findings of a major national study assessing the economic value of sport in England and reported for the first time on its value across all of the English regions. The reports highlight the increasing value of sport to the economy.

The North West Plan for Sport and Physical Activity is being delivered in recognition of and in synergy with a number of key national and regional strategies and initiatives that influence the region:

Sport England strategy

Governing bodies of sport and whole sport plans
Twenty priority sports have been identified and whole sport plans are being produced to provide a co-ordinated platform for delivery, providing a framework for sport for partners at all levels (nationally, regionally and locally).

The PE, school sport and club links national strategy
Launched on the 2 October 2002, this has a joint Department for Culture Media and Sport and Department for Education and Skills objective of enhancing the take up of sporting opportunities by 5 16 year olds.

Securing good health for the whole population: The Wanless Report
This review has focussed particularly on prevention and the wider determinants of health in England and on the cost-effectiveness of action that can be taken to improve the health of the whole population and reduce health inequalities.

Planning policy guidance note 17: Planning for open space, sport and recreation (PPG177 )
The Government’s planning guidance in relation to sport and recreation is contained in PPG17, which recognises that open space, sport and recreation all underpin people’s quality of life.

Government floor targets
Government has agreed floor targets with individual government departments, to reflect the Government’s cross cutting agenda and how individual departments can contribute to them.

Regional strategy links

Regional Economic Strategy (RES)
The RES has been established by partners in the region to transform England's North West through sustainable economic development.

Investment for health a plan for the North West
This plan is an attempt to establish a common approach and priorities between partners for improving health and inequalities in the region.

Action for sustainability
This provides a framework for achieving more sustainable development in the North West and has influenced the development of Regional Planning Guidance and the Regional Economic Strategy.

Cultural strategy for England’s North West
The strategy sets the overall context for the region including its cultural strengths and assets and what the North West’s Cultural Consortium believes can and should be done, together with its partners, to develop and improve cultural opportunities to add to the well being of the North West.

Regional planning guidance for the North West (RPG 13)
The overriding aim of RPG13 is to promote sustainable development and physical change. RPG13 gives planning guidance to the Region’s forty-six plan making local authorities.

State of the North West region: vital signs
The set of indicators adopted as vital signs provide a basis for examining the relative strengths and weaknesses on the North West from a variety of perspectives. This is available from the Government Office for the North West.
