Sunderland Designers Make a Splash with North East Sports Awards Trophies
Sport England North East has commissioned local designers at Sunderland’s National Glass Centre to produce unique trophies for the North East Sports Awards 2008.
Designers throughout the country competed for the honour of producing the gongs which will be presented in front of North East sporting VIPs on 7 December at Sunderland Aquatic Centre.
Judith Rasmussen, regional director with Sport England North East said: “2008 has been an exciting year for sport. We have had the amazing achievements of our regional sports people out in Beijing as well as exceptional national results of North East teams and of course the hard work of those unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes. It was important to us that the quality and design of the trophies measured up to the outstanding achievements we are recognising.
“2008 sees the North East Sports Awards move from their traditional home in Seaburn to the already iconic Sunderland Aquatic Centre so part of the design brief was to reflect the new location. The artists at the National Glass Centre captured this perfectly in a unique, handmade design resulting in the trophies being a stunning piece of artwork. I was delighted when a local design was selected – the North East is certainly leading the way, not only in sport but also in the arts.”
The organisers of the North East Sports Awards- Sport England, BBC and Sunderland City Council – studied a number of high quality designs before agreeing that the National Glass Centre submission had to be the first choice.
Jill Ellinsworth, senior glass blower at the National Glass Centre designed and will be making the awards. She said: “I was instantly inspired when I read the brief for the North East Sports Awards. Not only was this a prestigious, local event, but we needed to include a water element in the design. I chose a figurative form, poised as if preparing to dive into a pool of water. The colours and the bubbles attempt to convey the movement of the water once the diver has broken the calm surface and moved on.”
