CHILDREN FROM THE NORTH EAST COMPETE TO SHOWCASE THEIR ARTISTIC TALENT AT SPORTS AWARDS

The search is on to find entrants for a North East Sports Awards competition, that links sport and culture – a strong theme for the London 2012 Games.

The ‘Sport and Me’ drawing competition is open to children aged 11 years and under who live in the North East and the winner will get a two-night mini cruise break to Amsterdam with mum or dad, in association with DFDS Seaways, as well as having their winning drawing displayed at the Awards ceremony. Three runners up will each receive a goody bag filled with sporty gifts.

Judith Rasmussen, regional director with Sport England North East, said: “This is a great opportunity for children to illustrate how they perceive sport and a chance to reflect on their greatest sporting moments. It will be interesting to see what the children will focus on with their drawings, whether this is sport at home with their families, school sports days or even the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“You don’t have to be an elite athlete to become involved in sport. Sport can reach out to people in many different ways and the drawing competition has been designed to encourage children to think about ‘Sport and Me’ in what has been a fantastic Olympic year. So we’re shouting out to all children from the region to get their pencils at the ready and create their own masterpiece that will be viewed by hundreds of regional sporting VIPs!”

Winning drawings will be displayed at this year’s North East Sports Awards ceremony which will be held at Sunderland Aquatic Centre on Sunday 7 December 2008 to celebrate the achievements of those at grassroots level alongside world champions and Olympic and Paralympic medalists.

Teachers and parents are being urged to get their pupils and children involved and to submit colourful drawings for this exciting art competition. The maximum size of artwork is A3. Drawings cannot be returned and terms and conditions for prizes apply. The closing date for entries is Friday 21 November 2008.

Children are to send their drawings to:
