Hexham Canoe Club has achieved Sport England’s Quality Clubmark and the BCU Top Club awards –  accreditations that recognise the club’s attainment of the highest standards of safety and its commitment to encouraging young people in paddle sports.

The accreditation will be presented to the canoe club on Saturday 28th October at its boathouse on Tyne Green in Hexham.

Over a period of years, Sport England has been working with sport’s governing bodies to develop accreditation criteria to ensure clubs provide high quality opportunities for people to participate in.

Hexham Canoe Club provides people of all ages with the chance to take up an outdoor sport, with members ranging from seven years old to over 70.  And while some have gone on to compete at national and international level, most members participate for recreational reasons.

Bobby Timperley, BCU Paddlesport Development Officer for the N.E.Region said:  “The club was formed 11yrs ago and is now an important part of the community and offers people the chance to stay healthy and fit while meeting many new friends.

“We’re very proud of all the members and coaches who have worked really hard to achieve Quality Clubmark status.  With this, we know we can provide people of all abilities with the chance to take up a really enjoyable sport and, as we’re now on the Quality Clubmark database, we’re also looking forward to more local people taking an interest in canoeing and other water sports.”

Sessions take place on the River Tyne on Saturdays throughout the year with additional sessions on Wednesday evenings in the summer. In winter, sessions take place on a Friday evening at Hexham swimming pool.

Ian Gardiner, interim regional director at Sport England North East, says: “To be awarded clubmark status is an excellent achievement and is richly deserved. The award clearly recognises that the club is providing a quality service to its community, both in encouraging people to become physically active but also in supporting the development of talent”

Sport England works to create opportunities for people to excel and succeed in sport at every level through funding community projects.
