Building Schools for the Future

The Building Schools for the Future programme is a major Government initiative that will see £2.2bn allocated to education authorities in the UK for 2005-2006, with the promise of more to come in future years.

In the North East, Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside local education authorities have been included in the first wave. Middlesbrough LEA was successful in being included in Wave 2 and Durham LEA within Wave 3.  It is anticipated that a significant proportion of this funding will be used to improve sport facilities in schools and that these facilities will be accessible to the local community outside school hours.
