What’s your passion?’ says Sport England

This year, Sport England is helping to celebrate the huge contribution that volunteers have made to sport as part of the Year of the Volunteer celebrations.

Year of the Volunteer Awards are for individual volunteers who've made an especially great contribution to their local communities. Nominations can be received in one of five categories including; Innovation, Commitment, Impact, Inspiration, Partnership.

Over 2000 outstanding volunteers will be recognised with a Royal Mint medal at regional Awards ceremonies throughout England during October and November 2005. 450 of these volunteers will then be invited to a national awards ceremony, attended by MPs and Celebrities in London in January 2006.

Roger Lewis, Development Manager, Clubs Coaches and Volunteers at Sport England London said:

"Year of the Volunteer is a fantastic opportunity for the unsung heroes and heroines in sport to be recognised. In the forthcoming Sport Month we want everyone to celebrate the achievement of volunteers across London and everyone else who gives their time to help make sport happen in our community. Sports volunteers really make it happen – helping millions of people start, stay and succeed in sport. As well as being the lifeblood of community sport, volunteers have supported and inspired the nation’s leading sports men and women”.

The Year of the Volunteer is run by CSV and the Volunteering England Consortium, and supported by the Home Office. Twelve themed months have been organised as part of the celebrations. Sport England has been leading on Sport Month on behalf of Sport’s Strategic Partnership for Volunteers. All those involved are fully committed to ensuring that the key message of “thank you” is relayed to the 5.8 million volunteers across the country who already contribute to sport at all levels.
