A fantastic new game called “Tapeball Cricket” was launched on Tuesday October 4th at Stoke Newington School, in Hackney, East London with a helping hand of £66,360 from Sport England. This fast, exciting and fresh new style of cricket leaves the days of whites, long barriers and playing for a draw with the old school.
“Tapeball Cricket” has been developed by Opportunity Through Cricket’s Director of Programmes Andy Sellins. Andy said;
“The rise of English cricket has captured the imagination of so many people. However, Inner London has only four clubs and 11 cricket pitches to cater for over 2 million people. “Tapeball Cricket” will offer a raw, new alternative.”
This summer’s pilot programme involved over 30 estates and has been funded by Sport England. It is already being recognised by the cricketing establishment with guests expected on the night including the ECB, the MCC and the Lord’s Taverners. It could be the game that ensures that England remain on top of the world for years to come.
“Tapeball Cricket” will offer young people from recreationally deprived inner city areas the chance to share in the success of the England team whilst also offering them the chance to try a game that might one day make them one of England’s great heroes.
The project was particularly suited to receive Community Investment Funding given its commitment to creating and supporting sustainable innovative multi-activity environments in areas of social, sport and health deprivation. It introduces a new and creative solution that will engage people in sport and physical activity by addressing some of the perceived barriers to participation.
Matt Delaney, Regional Director of Sport England London said;
“We are absolutely delighted with the Tapeball Cricket Project. This is clearly a project that is going to make a significant difference to the local population of Hackney and will help to not only break down perceived barriers in sport but also improve health and well-being of all sections of society, especially those that do not normally take part in sport and physical activity.”

A ‘Tapeball’ is simply a tennis ball covered in tape to make it behave more like a cricket ball while minimising damage to people and property
Tapeball Cricket matches last 30 minutes and are 20 balls per side, it is fast moving and can be played all year round
Tapeball Cricket uses urban areas such as basketball courts and five a side pitches, which are more available in the inner city than cricket pitches
