THE WAY FORWARD FOR POSITIVE FUTURES
British Military Fitness (BMF) are the UK’s largest military style fitness provider offering one of the most effective ways available to get in shape. Sessions take place in parks throughout the country.
FIRST STEPS TO FITNESS PROGRAMME
The new programme is designed to cater for individuals who want to build up their fitness through a stepped approach. Classes will consist of brisk walking, some light jogging for short periods and a few basic low impact paired exercises. Attendees will be given plenty of encouragement, support and advice. They will also benefit from being part of a group of people. We will be offering 500 free places on our First Steps to Fitness programme in London starting at our Hyde Park and Clapham common venues on February 1st 2008. Places will initially be offered through consultation with public health professionals, then opened up to the general public. The duration of classes will be one hour. Classes must be booked through the BMF office (see below).
It is our hope that we can manage to get people fit enough to take part in our normal military fitness classes, and these will run alongside the programme. If the scheme is successful, we will roll it out at other venues in the UK where there is demand. The free scheme will last for one month, initially.
Major (retired) Robin Cope, Managing Director at BMF says: “We are acutely aware of the issues surrounding adult obesity and it is essential that we encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Tackling unhealthy food is one way of addressing the issue, but exercising should be a part of the daily routine too. The free classes are aimed at those people who really have got into a rut health wise. We hope that our dedicated and motivational staff will be able to provide a platform from which people can change their outlook. The kind of training we offer is also environmentally friendly, safe and is above all a very socially interactive way of training.”

Notes to Public Health Professionals/Editors:
-We are offering this service for free. As a private company we will be encouraging people to sign up for normal BMF classes at the end of the free month. If the people referred to us feel they are capable of taking normal classes then they will be encouraged to do so. We will work at the pace of the weakest members of the group
-Classes run for an hour. Normal training kit is needed eg good pair of trainers and tracksuit or gym gear plus warm change of clothing for after class. There are no changing facilities but there will be secure facilities for valuables
-Normal BMF classes are run in parks in cities including: London (13 venues), Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Colchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Liverpool and Reading
