On 19th October members of LOOP (Lifestyle Opportunities for Older People) and Lewisham residents, celebrated winning the Olympic Bid by getting fit for 2012 with the Everyday Sport Campaign. The 'Olympic Fun Day for the 45 Plus' was held in conjunction with The Mayor of London

LOOP (Lifestyle Opportunities for Older People) and Lewisham residents who access the physical activity services that LOOP provides, celebrated the winning of the 2012 Olympics and got fit for 2012 by supporting the Everyday Sport Campaign with activities including Line Dancing, Swimming, Badminton, Circuits, Gentle Exercise, Tai Chi and Bowls.

Starting at 10.00 at The Bridge Leisure Centre, Kangley Bridge Road, Sydenham, the Olympic Fun Day for the 45 plus was a chance for LOOP to show older adults in Lewisham what they have to offer, where they can offer it and how much fun exercise can be.

Matthew Delaney, Director of Sport England London Region said: “The Everyday Sport message is that everybody can feel and look better being active. LOOP are a fantastic example of `Everyday Sport` in action offering a whole range of activities in Lewisham for older people who would not normally have the chance to be active. Through the campaign, we hope to encourage every borough in London to offer its older residents the same kind of opportunities to enjoy sport and activity.”

The Everyday Sport campaign is all about small steps making a big difference. Everyday Sport can mean different things to different people, from taking the stairs instead of the lift or getting off the bus a stop early to joining a sports club or registering for an exercise class.

Sport England has been set a target by Government of increasing participation in sport and physical activity by 3% in the next three years. Everyday Sport is the first major initiative in this long-term plan.

International studies demonstrate that long terms campaigns hold the key to increasing participation in physical activity and sport. In countries such as Finland, Canada and Germany, the combination of high quality facilities, significant investment in clubs, coaches and volunteers, underpinned by campaigning and performance measurement, has increased participation.

Everyday Sport already has the support of more than 60 famous faces from the worlds of politics, celebrity and sport, including Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, Sports Minister Richard Caborn, Sebastian Coe, Rio Ferdinand, James Cracknell, Jonny Wilkinson, Steve Cram, sports commentating legend Barry Davies, Jonathan Edwards, Nell McAndrew, Donna Air and Jayne Middlemiss.
