Work starts on £4million lean "green" sports facility

Eco-friendly centre will be covered with a plant roof

Building work on a new £4.3million eco-friendly sport and community centre in Paddington has begun.

The new Crompton Street Sports Centre will provide a four-court sports hall, a multi-purpose dance studio and a 30-station fitness suite.

There will also be video suite to capture and analyse people’s movement, a fully IT-equipped classroom and a mini-satellite library.

The £4.3million scheme - which will create many leisure opportunities for the local community in keeping with the council’s One City policy - includes more than £1.6million in external funding from Sport England, Skills Active, Big Lottery Fund and John Lyon’s Charity Trust.

Councillor Daniel Astaire, Cabinet Member for Customer and Community Services, said: “Keeping fit and exercise are important for all of us - young or old - as we live increasingly sedentary lives.

“This centre will provide an excellent resource for young people to work and play – learning through both the benefits of fitness and exercise.

“It will also provide a valuable focal point for the local community where people can catch up with friends through sport or other community activities.”

Sean Holt, Director of Sport England London, which has contributed £320,000 towards the scheme, said: “We are absolutely delighted that work is about to begin on Crompton Street Sports Centre. Sport England is committed to investing in London sporting opportunities and projects like this to provide a safe facility for youngsters of all levels to participate in sport. We hope the people of Westminster enjoy and take full advantage of this excellent provision.”

The works will coincide with the £25million regeneration of sports facilities in Marshall Street to transform the Grade II listed baths into a modern, fully equipped sports centre.

These and a £1.45million refurbishment and extension of the pavilion at Paddington Recreation Ground will provide residents with increased choice of affordable, top-of-the range leisure facilities and encourage a greater sense of community for nearby residents by creating sporting and social hubs for them to use.

The new centre, which was formerly Westminster Children’s Sports Centre, has been planned in close partnership with the Council’s Go Green Board to ensure it has low carbon emissions.

As well as low-energy heating and lighting, the building will have a “green” sedum roof to absorb harmful CO2 and improve temperatures inside the centre – acting as insulation in winter and preventing some heat absorption in the summer.

The roof will also provide excellent noise reduction – an important factor given the building is to be predominantly used by children and young people.

The sports centre will be the focal point for a number of services including sports, education, health, employment and training.

Work is due to begin by contractors Crispin and Borst Ltd on February 20, 2008 and should be complete by February 2009.

Contractors will first prepare and level the site before laying the foundations.

In May they are due to begin the steel framework for the new centre.
