Kirklees Active Leisure are a Charitable Trust delivering a diverse range of sport, leisure and healthy activities at our various sports centres and swimming pools throughout Kirklees.

Their mission is to ensure there are 'more people, more active, more often in Kirklees' through removing barriers to participation, creating opportunities to be active and by providing affordable sport, leisure and recreational activities.

As a Trustee you will ensure that Kirklees Active Leisure fulfils its strategic direction and responds to the needs of the local community, working in close partnership with a wide range of partners.

Board meetings take place every other month and they are now looking to expand their group of Volunteer Trustees.

David Heddon Chair of Trustees
Following a 12 year career teaching PE, David joined Sports England, Yorkshire Region in 1976. After 25 years service he retired from the post of Regional Director in 2001. David has since worked in leisure management Consultancy, assisting many local authorities including facilitating the development of Leisure Trusts in Wigan and Kirklees. Chair of Kirklees since its inception in 2002, David also holds a number of other voluntary positions, including Director of the English Federation of Disability Sport Operating Company

Julie Muscroft Trustee Partner
Walker Morris Solicitors Leeds Julie is a partner in Walker Morris’s Public Sector and Projects Team. Before this, Julie spent 12 years as a Solicitor in local government, specialising on local authority projects, PFI and company and commercial issues as well as general local government law and vire. From 1993 until 1999, Julie was a principal legal officer and team leader of the Commercial and Company Legal Team at Kirklees Council.

Ken Gillespie Company Secretary Director of Regeneration
Kirklees Council Ken has responsibility for the Regeneration Development Service and for Town Planning, Economic Development, Building Control, Licensing and Markets, Culture and Leisurer, and is a member of the Council’s Executive Management Group.A chartered Town Planner, Ken is an Advisory Group Member of Partnerships UK, the public private partnership created by Government to push forward innovative approaches in public private partnerships.

Cllr David Woodhead Trustee Liberal Democrat Councillor
Kirklees Born in Huddersfield and educated at Huddersfield New College. David received a BA (Econ) and MA (Econ) from Manchester University and a Ph.D from Durham University. Head of History, Politics, Philospohy and Theology at Woolwich Polytechnic, David also served as a councillor in Greenwich for 12 years. David retired to Yorkshire in 2002 and elected to Meltham Town Council in 2003, becoming chair in 2006. David was elected to Kirklees council in 2007 for Holme Valley North.

John Briggs Trustee Managing Director – Alfred Briggs Sons & Co Ltd, (Textile Engineers)
John was appointed Managing Director of Alfred Briggs Sons & Co Ltd in 1969. Between 1993 and 2000, he was a NonExecutive Director of Dewsbury Health Care NHS Trust, holding a variety of posts, including ViceChairman, Chair of Disciplinary Panel and Chair of Personnel Interview Panel. John later became a member of the Calderdale and Kirklees Health Authority NonExecutive Group. John is an active member of a number of local charitable and Trust organisations

Bruce M. Deadman Trustee Retired
Bruce has a wealth of experience following 34 years in sports education, directorship and consultancy. Starting his career as a PE teacher, Bruce quickly moved to Head of department at Whitcliffe Mount Grammar School and then Sports Centre Manager at Whitcliffe in 1975. Working for Kirklees Council, he was Recreation Development Officer and then Assistant Director (Indoor) in 1984. Management Consultant to the Student Games in Sheffield in 1991, Bruce then lectured on Sport and Leisure at Barnsley College before retiring. Satnam Khela Trustee Originally a teacher, Satnam went into business in 1981 which included the development of public houses, wine bars, restaurants, property, nightclubs and outside catering. In addition he established Home FM (now Pennine FM) Involved in the local strategic partnership, he is a governing council member at the University of Huddersfield, a governor at Greenhead College, a trustee and business adviser to The Sikh Leisure Centre, a committee member of the Sikh Temple and a member of the Huddersfield Town Centre association.
