The Foresight Project, a registered charity based in Grimsby, has employed a full time development officer in its aim to broaden access to sport and active recreation for sensory impaired and physically disabled people in North East Lincolnshire.
Alan Finnigan joined the project on April 7, as the charity moved into its new premises, taking on the role of Development Officer, which will enable the organisation to increase and develop the facilities they offer to people in the region. Alan’s first hand experience working in a day centre environment for adults with learning difficulties, together with his role as Community and Leisure Coordinator for North East Lincolnshire, makes him ideally placed to take the project forward.
The Foresight taking the Dis out of Disability through Sport project officially launched on April 22 at the Foresight Centre on Newmarket Street and will seek to expand the provision of local facilities, providing better access and additional routes. Helping them do this is the Yorkshire division of national Government agency Sport England, which advises, invests in and promotes community sport in the region.
This recruitment drive comes as a welcome boost for the region, as results from the Active People Survey (2006), showed that 77.6% of disabled people in North East Lincolnshire are not accessing any form of sporting activity. Furthermore, additional research conducted by Foresight revealed that many people wanted to access such facilities but were unable to do so due to lack of provisions.
The project, coupled with the charity’s high standard for training and development, hopes to see an increase in the recruitment of volunteer opportunities in the area, something Foresight has an excellent reputation for. Paul Silvester comments, “The project should also see a strengthening of links with local community groups, health care trusts and education authorities.
“Alan’s recruitment will enable Foresight to move forward in a positive way, as his already established relationships with other agencies like North East Lincolnshire Council’s Sports Development Unit and local leisure providers can only aid the projects development within the local community.”
