Sport England today made £325,000 available to England Basketball with immediate effect to help them reform and realise the potential of the sport.

Jennie Price, Chief Executive of Sport England, said:

"Basketball matters. It's a sport which is very attractive to young people. It can draw in hard to reach youngsters and help them develop the sporting habit.  Our Active People Survey tells us that around 275,000 people currently play basketball. We want to agree an ambitious target with England Basketball. This could be as much as doubling the current number of participants by 2012.

The money is being released to England Basketball on the understanding that they will step up to the challenge to take the sport to the next level.  We will be looking for evidence of a substantial programme of reforms along the lines proposed by the independent Mallin Review. It will take dynamic leadership from England Basketball to meet this challenge and we will work with them to implement these reforms."

The £325,000 award will be the first step to releasing substantial increased funding to the sport if progress is made, as recommended by the independent Mallin Review.

Discussions will continue and progress will be carefully monitored by Sport England before more funding comes on stream.

Sport England's core aim is to sustain and increase adult (16 plus) participation in community sport. It has set itself the target of getting two million individuals aged 16 and over participating more in sport by 2012.  Basketball has been identified as a key development sport to contribute to this mission.
