The Research:
This survey is the third undertaken by Sport England into young people's participation in sport. The first two were carried out in 1994 and 1999. As with the first two surveys the 2002 survey aims to investigate young people's involvement in sport and the personal, social and institutional influences that affect their participation and to track changes that have occurred since the 1994 survey.
The outcomes of this latest survey is of particular interest to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport who is keen to see what progress has been made in young people's participation in sport since 1999, particularly in terms of curriculum time given to sport (the percentage of young people who receive at least 2 hours of PE a week), the average amount of time young people spend taking part in sport outside of school lessons in term time and the average amount of time they spend taking part in sport in the school holidays.
The 2002 survey will involve young people (aged 6 to 16) and teachers in schools.
