The research
This study provides the latest national sports participation data. The data comes from the 1996 General Household Survey (GHS) which is based on a sample of the adult population (aged 16 or over) resident in private households in Great Britain. Face-to-face interviews took place in the home, involving 15,000 adults in 10,000 households. Questions on sport were first included on the GHS in 1973 and have since been included in 1977, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1993, and most recently in 1996. The questions provide information on the level of participation in sport overall and within individual sports. Analysis is also available by gender, age group and socioeconomic group.
