The Active People Survey is the largest ever survey of sport and active recreation to be undertaken in Europe.

The survey provides by far the largest sample size ever established for a sport and recreation survey and will allow levels of detailed analysis previously unavailable. It identifies how participation varies from place to place and between different groups in the population.

The survey also measures; the proportion of the adult population that volunteer in sport on a weekly basis, club membership, involvement in organised sport/competition, receipt of tuition or coaching, and overall satisfaction with levels of sporting provision in the local community.

The questionnaire was designed to enable analysis of the findings by a broad range of demographic information, such as gender, social class, ethnicity, household structure, age and disability.

The Active People Survey 2005/6

The first year of the survey was conducted between October 2005 and October 2006, and was a telephone survey of 363,724 adults in England (aged 16 plus) and is unique in providing reliable statistics on participation in sport and active recreation for all 354 Local Authorities in England (a minimum of 1,000 interviews were completed in every Local Authority in England).

Headline results from the 2005/6 Active People Survey were published in December 2006, with full, detailed results available via a sophisticated online reporting and analysis tool, Active People Diagnostic.

The Active People Survey 2007/8

Due to the huge success of the Active People Survey 2005/6, Sport England is repeating the Active People Survey, and it will now run as a continuous annual survey.

The second year of the survey commenced on 15 October 2007.

National Indicator 8 (NI8)

NI8 is the national indicator for adult sport and active recreation, and will be measured by Sport England’s Active People Survey. NI8 is the percentage of the adult population (age 16 years and over) in a local area who participate in sport and active recreation, at moderate intensity, for at least 30 minutes on at least 12 days out of the last 4 weeks (equivalent to 30 minutes on 3 or more days a week).

Sport and active recreation includes the sports and recreational activities as measured in the Active People Survey (including for example recreational walking and recreational cycling).

Moderate intensity includes 'brisk' walking, those activities that 'raise the breathing rate' and some lighter intensity activities for those aged 65 years and over - yoga; pilates; indoor and outdoor bowls; archery and croquet. Please note NI8 differs from Sport England's KPI1 (Participation) due to the inclusion in NI8 of certain light intensity sports for those aged 65 years and over.

Baseline (2005/6) data for NI8 from Active People Survey 1 (conducted between mid October 2005 and mid October 2006) is available (within Tier 1) via Sport England's Active People Diagnostic: Access to Active People Diagnostic is open to all registered users of the site.
