National Award for Scorpion Martial Arts Academy
Stowmarket’s Scorpion Martial Arts Academy has become the first Karate and Kickboxing club in the country to achieve Sport England’s Clubmark award as part of a pilot scheme pioneered by Suffolk Sport.
Clubmark is a cross-sport accreditation programme based around a list of criteria covering areas such as child protection, coaching qualifications and club management. By achieving Clubmark, the Scorpion Academy have demonstrated that they meet a nationally-recognised standard and that they provide a quality environment in which their junior members can develop their skills.
The club were presented with the award by Kevin Wray, Senior Development Manger at Sport England East, who said “We are very pleased to award Sport England Clubmark to Scorpion Martial Arts Academy as recognition for the hard and dedicated work of the club to ensure the best for its young members”.
The ceremony took place at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre, Stowmarket, on Sunday as part of a pre-grading practice, and was attended by many of the club’s juniors and their parents, as well as representatives from Sport England, Suffolk Sport and Mid Suffolk District Council. A demonstration was put on for the visitors, giving the youngsters the opportunity to show off the skills they have learned through being a member of the Academy.
Scorpion Martial Arts Academy was set up in 1993 by Chief Coach, Master Mark Trent (Fifth Degree Blackbelt), and now has more than 250 members ranging from ages five to 50. In order to get Clubmark, the club had to complete a comprehensive assessment file, as well as send its instructors on various courses. However, Master Mark Trent said, “It was worth all the hard work as we can now offer our many students an even higher standard of Karate and Kickboxing. This is an award that everyone in the club should be proud of.”
While working towards the award, the club were given help and advice by Mid Suffolk District Council’s Sports Development Team. Master Mark Trent stated, “we were very lucky to have their support over the last year, in particular that of Chloe McMorran, Assistant Sports Development Officer. Her knowledge and understanding of Clubmark were fantastic.”
Chloe McMorran added, “I am absolutely delighted for Mark and the Scorpion Academy, it’s a tremendous achievement, especially being the first club of its kind in England to gain the recognition they thoroughly deserve through the accreditation scheme. Whilst working closely with the Academy I was increasingly impressed with the extra commitment Mark demonstrated. He has established a brilliant Junior Programme, not only encouraging participation in sport but building motivation and self confidence as well”.
Suffolk Sport is a county-wide Partnership which, as well as organising sporting activities for young people and support for coaches, also aims to work with local clubs to enable them to develop and improve. Until recently clubs could only achieve accreditation if the National Governing Body of their sport had adopted Clubmark. Suffolk Sport has been working closely with Sport England on a pilot scheme to enable clubs who cannot access Clubmark through their Governing Body to instead work towards accreditation through Suffolk Sport. To date, 15 clubs within the county have begun working towards accreditation as part of this pilot, but the Scorpion Academy are the first to have achieved the award.
Jane Horner, Sports Development Manager for Suffolk Sport, said “we felt that all Suffolk clubs that offer quality junior provision should be able to get recognition for their efforts, not just those from certain sports. We are really pleased to have been able to work with Sport England to become an awarding body for Clubmark, and we are delighted that the Scorpion Academy are the first club to gain Clubmark through us, as they set a shining example for other clubs to follow”.
