Funding for screening days
The East Midlands Rugby Football Union held an U13 screening and assessment day for aspiring young players on Sunday 4h May at the Northampton Saints. The talent identification processhas been made possible through the Club and Coach award provided through Sport England.

Tennis and Training for Regional Minister

Lincolnshire Federation of Equality Sport launched
Over 150 people have celebrated the launch of the Lincolnshire Federation of Equality Sport (LFES) at St George’s School, Sleaford. The launch is a milestone for equality sport in the county and of real benefit to the East Midlands region.

Eon Ice Rink is huge success
Nottingham’s first outdoor rink has been a huge success with over 63,000 skaters taking a spin on the ice. Open for just over seven weeks the National Ice Centre’s E.ON Ice Rink quickly became an essential Christmas and New Year activity.

Funding secured for South Holland Sports Tour
South Holland’s successful Summer Sports Tour is going to be even bigger next year after funding was secured to extend the scheme to adults. This year over 3,000 young people in the Lincolnshire district sampled a variety of sports.

Gymnastics in Amber Valley to benefit from grant
Gymnastics in Amber Valley in Derbyshire has been given a boost thanks to a successful application to Sport England's Community Investment Fund. £77,000 has been awarded to establish a dedicated gymnastics facility at Alfreton Leisure Centre.

Canoe coach makes a splash
Since his appointment as a Community Sports Coach for Nottingham Kayak Club 56 year old Mick Nadal from West Brigford has lost over three stone and has regained his fitness to the same level that he had when he was in his 20’s.

Arnold Town receive £1.4 million boost
Arnold Town Football Club have been awarded funding worth £1.4m to become a sporting hub in their Nottingham community. Local MP and Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker presented a cheque at the site of the new sports complex.

Leicester selected as European sporting city
Leicester has been chosen to represent the UK in a European-wide network of sporting cities. It was given the title of 2008 European City of Sport UK after a two-day inspection of its sporting facilities and programmes by a panel of visiting judges.

East Midlands leads the way in Community Sports Coach Scheme
The East Midlands is leading the way in a key Government initiative to increase the number of sports coaches. So far the East Midlands has recruited 166.5 new full and part time coaches as part of the Community Sports Coach Scheme, more than any other region and 20% of all coaches recruited across England.

World cycling champion Backs the Bid

Olympic silver medallists canoeist Campbell Walsh and cyclist Bryan Steel were amongst the local sports stars at the Harlem Globetrotters show at Nottingham Arena for the launch of the East Midlands Sporting Advocates programme. The stars competed against each other in a basketball shoot out at half time.

Tim Reddish granted freedom of Nottingham
Director of British Disability Swimming Tim Reddish MBE will be nominated Honorary Freeman of Nottingham City at a special City Council meeting. The Nottingham-born former swimmer is only the 34th person in more than 100 years to be given such an honour and will be recognised alongside fellow townsman Mich Stevenson OBE.

Mobile ramp park project on a roll
An innovative project to establish a mobile ramp park facility, based in one of the most deprived areas of Corby in Northamptonshire, as a social enterprise has taken a step closer to reality. New football facilities for Newark
Newark Town Football Club and Newark and Sherwood District Council’s new facilities at Devon Park will be officially opened on 2nd May, thanks to a £148,326 grant from the Football Foundation. The cash boost is part of a £9.4m Community Club Development funding package developed by Sport England, the Government and the Football Association.

Braunstone Leisure Centre is set to play centre stage to a specially arranged basketball match in honour of one of Leicester’s most popular sports stars, Karl Brown, former player and now coach of Leicester Riders. People in Leicester are being urged to back the London Olympic 2012 bid by signing a huge flag. City council officials said signing the flag would show both the bid organisers and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) how much Leicester wants the games in London.

Dickie Bird Foundation funds promising ice skater
Sporting legend Dickie Bird has paid a visit to the National Ice Centre in Nottingham to make the day of one promising young ice skater. Fourteen year old Lesley Murphy was given the surprise of her life when she was awarded £1,000 from the Dickie Bird Foundation, by the man himself.

Swimming great honoured by City of Leicester
It has taken almost 100 years, but the 'world's first great female swimmer' has been officially honoured in her home town. Jennie Fletcher was born in Belgrave in 1890 and went on to become a key member of Leicester Ladies Swimming Club at Cossington Street Baths.

Voting’s begun to find the East Midlands Sports Personality of 2004. Local radio listeners have chosen county winners and the outright winner will be crowned at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards on Sunday December 5th at the Council House in Nottingham. Last year's winner was Martin Johnson.

Vale Judo Club awarded Clubmark
The Vale Judo Club in Oakham, Rutland is one of only six clubs in the country and the first in the region to achieve the Bronze Level of the British Judo Association's Club Recognition Scheme. As a result the club has also been awarded with Sport England's Clubmark.

British Open Squash returns to Nottingham
The East Midlands continues its reputation for holding top international sporting events with the return of the British Open Squash Championships to Nottingham. The Open will take place from 29 October to 6 November, with the later rounds of the event being staged on the all-glass court at the city's Albert Hall.

The East Midlands has the chance to salute the momentous achievement of Olympic Gold Medal winner Bradley Wiggins when the 3rd Stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race takes place on the roads of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire on Friday 3rd September.

Tour of Britain to visit the East Midlands
World class cyclists from around the world will take to the East Midlands roads as the Tour of Britain makes a welcome return. The East Midlands Development Agency (emda) is sponsoring the region’s leg of the race and has managed to secure the visit of the Tour that will pass through Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

The BBC East Midlands Sports Awards are a celebration of sport across the region. This year the BBC has teamed up with East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and Sport England East Midlands for an event that will be one of the highlights of the sporting calendar.

Kettering athletics track to open after refurbishment
Kettering athletics track will re-open on Saturday 3 July as part of the opening ceremony of the Northamptonshire Sport Youth Games. The £70,000 project was funded by Kettering borough council with contributions totalling £19,000 allocated from the Sport England Lottery Fund, Kettering Town Harriers and Kettering Community Leisure Limited.
